After leaving the concentration camps, we set off to visit the only operating salt mine in the world: Wieliczka. The Wieliczka salt mine reaches a depth of 1,073 ft and
is over 190 mi long. The touring route that we took was 2.2 miles long, and is only 1% of the length of the mine's passages. Many sculptures have been carved out of the salt, and can be seen throughout the touring route. The mines were placed on the UNESCO world heritage list in 1978.
